Where do I start?
Answer two quick questions. We'll show you exactly what to do next.
Social Worker View
Use this triage to quickly locate a client on the redetermination timeline and route them to the right screen.
What is happening with your food benefits right now?
Do you know why your food benefits stopped?
Your next step
Find your review date
You have a review coming up. Missing it can stop your food benefits. Let's find your deadline and make sure you don't miss it.
Client has received a redetermination packet. Route to Branch 1 to surface the review date, mid-review deadline, and required documents.
Before you call, try to have:
- Your review letter or notice
- Proof of income (pay stubs or a letter from your employer)
- Proof of address (a bill or lease)
- Your photo ID
Your next step
Check on your case
You've turned in your papers — now you're in the waiting period. Here's what's happening and what to watch for.
Client is in a pending status. Route to Branch 3. Key risk at this stage: a supplemental document request in kynect that the client may not know to check.
While you wait:
- Check kynect for any new document requests
- Watch your mail for letters from DCBS
- Decisions can take up to 30 days — if it's been longer, call
Your next step
Find out when your review is
Even if everything seems fine right now, your food benefits need to be renewed every year. Most people don't know their review date — and missing it is the most common reason benefits stop.
Client is in active status but unaware of their review timeline. Route to Branch 1. Priority: surface the certification end date and any pending mid-review task.
You'll need:
- Your kynect login, or
- Your case number from a past letter
Your next step
You have the right to appeal
If you think your food benefits were stopped by mistake, you can ask for a Fair Hearing. Someone new will review your case. You have 90 days from your notice to ask — the sooner the better.
Client believes termination was erroneous. Route to Branch 4 Fair Hearing path. Note: ~17% of SNAP terminations nationally involve state error (USDA CAPER). Do not assume the termination was correct before reviewing the case record. Window: 90 days from the notice date.
Before you call:
- Find the notice that says your benefits were stopped
- Note the date on that notice — your 90 days starts there
- Gather anything that shows your income or household size
Your next step
You may be able to get them back
Even after benefits stop, there is often a 30-day window to get them restarted without starting over. Let's check if you're still in that window.
Client may be within the post-termination recovery window. Source: KY DCBS Operations Manual, Vol. II, MS 6520 (R.08/21/23). Two windows apply: 30 days from end of cert period (timely app) or 30 days from discontinuance (untimely app). Route to Branch 4 to calculate the deadline.
You'll need:
- The date your benefits stopped — check your notice or kynect
- Any documents you were asked to turn in
